Query Roulette: Learning From Last Year

Query Roulette

It’s that time of year again…Query Roulette is back folks, and if you haven’t already, NOW is the time to sign up! For those of you new to the event, let me fill you in. There’s 11 literary agents, 10 possible time slots, and you. For each agent you choose to meet, you’ll have 10 valuable minutes of face-to-face time. We recommend you use that time to discuss your query letter, but if instead you want to talk Game of Thrones or summer vacay plans — well that’s up to you.

Despite its name, success at Query Roulette has virtually nothing to do with chance. The time table for the evening is meticulously compiled by WNBA co-recording secretary Rachel Slaiman. Rachel’s hard work ensures that a maximum number of participants get to speak with the agents of their choice. Similarly, we’ve historically heard that the participants who prepare the most, walk away with the most. Doing your research to pick the right agents and prepare your best pitches, doesn’t guarantee you’ll be signed. But, those steps are paramount in ensuring you receive usable and actionable advice.

To help you prepare, read what some of last year’s agents had to say.

What are you particularly excited to hear about from the participants you meet?

Amelia Appel: I love knowing where their stories come from, and I’m always fascinated by the inspiration.

Gabbie Piraino: That they did research on me, and what genres they fit in. So many queries don’t match my interests, but these authors did their homework!

Tess Callero: That they’ve done their research and know my specific interests.

Amy Bishop: I’m excited to hear both their written and verbal pitches as well as some of their enthusiasm, which is harder to get via query letter.

Latoya Smith: That the authors have gotten great and useful info to help them on their publishing journey.

Check back next week to learn what the agents this year are looking for!

  1. Hi, this is my first time. Could you explain the price? Is it per agent or just one entry fee?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Debra, we’re so glad you’re interested in participating! Pricing is per session. $45 for non-members, and $33 for members. Additional discounts apply if you book five or more sessions. Let us know if you have anymore questions!
