New Year’s Party: Recap

Hudson Hound

Returning members and new faces of the WNBA-NYC started off the new year on the right foot. They filled the back private room of Hudson Hound in Greenwich Village on January 15, 2020 with food, drink, and books for their annual New Year’s Party.

There were lively discussions about what people did over the holidays, and the newly reacquainted members kept the conversation going throughout the night. Members talked about their current writings, podcast projects, and the Brooklyn Book Festival — despite the fact that it ended months ago in October. They also anticipated participation in upcoming WNBA events over the next few months.

The most valuable aspect of any organization is its members, and getting them to join is never an easy task. Once a new member joins, it is interesting to hear about why and how they found the organization. New members at last month’s event commented that the WNBA provided a way to break into the publishing industry without a direct contact. Many felt like they were at a disadvantage and that being a member of an organization with so many writers and publishing professionals would give them the edge they needed.

Attendees also talked about what areas of publishing they wanted to pursue. Editorial and marketing careers are arguably two of the most popular careers pursued in the industry. However, the typically overlooked fields of foreign rights, contracts, and legal services are now becoming of interest to new members.
