Many of you may have already heard, but due to unforeseen circumstances we will unfortunately need to postpone the WNBA-NYC Scavenger Hunt until Spring 2019. However, don’t fret. We have plenty of upcoming events to keep you occupied until then.
2018 HOLIDAY BOOK DRIVE AND GIFT WRAPPING PARTY, Thursday, November 29th
For this annual book drive we partner with Young Publishing Group (YPG) and Children’s Book Council (CBC). Donations primarily go to Behind the Book, a literacy non-profit. The organization’s “mission is to inspire New York City public school students to love reading by bringing accomplished authors and books into classrooms.” I’m sure all of you had a favorite book when growing up. Judy B. Jones, Wind in the Willows, The Boxcar Children – whatever it was, bring a copy to the book drive. It might resonate with another child the way it did with you. Even if you can’t bring a book, come help us wrap the other donations! As always, there will be snacks and wine for the volunteers!
2018 ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY, Thursday December 6th
Want to know what’s happening with other members? Do you just need an excuse to eat, drink, and engage in bookish conversation? Well this is the event for you. As a new member, I’ve never been to the WNBA Holiday party. But with some excellent book giveaways and all you lovely ladies, I’m sure it will be a good time.
WNBA-NYC READING GROUP, Saturday, December 8th
The WNBA’s Ladies Who Brunch are a dedicated group of book lovers who meet every couple of months. Their book picks are always recently released, female written novels, and the conversation is always enlightening. Last month the ladies gathered to discuss character development in I’ll See You in Paris. Next month’s lively discussion will revolve around Fiona Davis’ The Masterpiece. Readers are encouraged to come even if they don’t get a chance to read the whole book!
HOLIDAY WRITING CHALLENGE
An event I’m particularly excited for; this year the WNBA-NYC is hosting a Holiday Writing Challenge. Exercise your writing muscles and submit an entry! The entries will be reviewed by 3 members of the NYC board, and the top three picks will be anonymously featured on our blog. Members will then vote on their favorite submission. The winner will receive a free copy of Women in the Literary Landscape and reading time at our Annual Spring Brunch!
The rules for submission follow:
- You must be a WNBA member to submit an entry, and your submission must be an original piece no longer than 400 words.
- You must incorporate at least one of the following quotes into your submission:
- We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. (Independence Day)
- Ya filthy animal. (Home Alone)
- It came without ribbons. (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 1966)
- Oh look another glorious morning. (Hocus Pocus)
- Yippee-ki-yay. (Die Hard)
- All submissions should be sent to blog@wnba-nyc.org. We will accept entries received until December 14th or until we receive the first 50 member entries.
- Please ensure all submissions are formatted with Times New Roman, font size 12, and are double spaced.
