During this pandemic, emergency personnel are more likely to contract Covid-19. However, their families are also going through this with them.
WNBA member Rachel Slaiman shares how she is keeping morale up for both her husband and herself.
Quarantine Challenges
Quarantine. A word no one wants to hear or experience. My husband John sadly came down with Covid-19 because of transporting patients and other exposures through his work as an EMT.
His illness hit me hard and I knew I needed to stay upbeat and strong for his sake. I thought it would be fun to take a 7 Day Random Things Challenge. I freely chose things from my “I do it later” list and see if I could live up to the challenge.

John recovered from the virus and I was inspired by the “clap at 7pm” to give him my own “hero’s welcome”. I was able to get his best friend Timmy to come over and surprise him with dinner for two. He was pleased to see him and catch up a bit about life other than EMS.

The weather had been a bit crummy, so I decided to do a little baking to bring up the moral that we were facing. I made my famous chocolate chip cookies only to find out that a few were snagged before they were even cooled. The baking was meant to be a fun surprise, but that clearly did not last long.

Local pizza day at Pizzalinos ordering our usual medium pepperoni with Italian sausage. We got in some exercise by racing down to the pizza place and loser bought since we could not agree on who should pay. John lost.

I love Zumba Dance to release the negativity and stress from the day. After being nagged about adding weights to my Zumba routine, I thought it would be a neat experience to try Zumba Toning that incorporated weights. Lo and behold, I am hooked, and it is worth a try for any who loves cardio but needs weight training as well.

We walked for fun today and left the car at home to explore Bayonne, New Jersey, where I live. It was a perfect weather day for added exercise.

I took a break from technology and opened my writing prompt books. I landed on a random page and the topics I wrote about were the world’s saddest joke, a guilty pleasure, the car your father drove, and favorite fruits.

After a few book clubs fell by the wayside, I gave it another chance with WNBA Bookwoman Book Club. It gave me a chance to meet members from other chapters, introduce our short backgrounds, and see what their takeaway was about The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson.
Takeaway
Doing the challenge helped me to see that there are fun things to do without thinking about Covid-19 all the time. It has lent me an opportunity to be creative again and reinvigorate my inner writer. I would highly encourage anyone to partake in a challenge. Heck, we have the time.
