Independent Bookstore Day 2024 fell on April 27th and what a beautiful day it was. This year, the San Fransisco chapter joined us via Instagram while we explored the Upper East Side in New York. Starting off with Shakespeare & Co on 68th Street & Lexington Ave, offering titles and genres stretching from fiction, non-fiction and yes, plays! Want to sit for a bit and read your newest purchase? The shop also has a café in the front with beverage names paying homage to some of William Shakespeare’s greatest. Think you can pick out the menu below?

Our second stop was Kitchen Arts & Letters on Lexington Ave & 93rd Street, a niche store for all things food. From cookbooks to cocktail recipes to restaurant guides, all food interest can be found here. Oh, and did I mention they also have works on the history of certain foods and beverages?

Our third stop was Corner Bookstore, on the literal corner of Madison Ave & 96th Street, is a quaint little shop with an old-school feel. Just check out that cash register! Sadly, I didn’t catch a picture of it, but it is most certainly an antique. This store carries an array of genres, including a small reading area for kids. Even spotted a book about the celebration of our independent bookstores! The cover features the Corner Bookstore storefront, titled Books & Mortar, The Celebration of the Local Bookstore by Gibbs M. Smith.

Our last stop, which was a bit of a trek, was the Logos Bookstore at 1575 York Ave. Understandably, we were all tired by this last store, but we were relieved to have made it as far as we did. Logos is also home to a few cats! The narrow shop not only carries a mix of genres and stationary items, but it has several shelves dedicated to Jewish works and a small reading couch just beneath it.

And, that’s a wrap!
