Annual Networking Party Recap

Members at the Fall Networking EventThe WNBA’s 2018-19 season is off to a great start. On Tuesday, September 26 the New York City chapter kicked-off the season with their Annual Networking Party. Members, old and new, stopped in to mingle and discuss their career paths and goals — all while snacking and drinking wine.

Long time member, Ellen Pober Rittberg said she was looking forward to renewing old friendships, meeting new people, and networking. She was also thrilled to just be around people who love books and media. Rittberg was one of many to voice their excitement, both for the evening and for the rest of the season.

Women in the Literary Landscape

Clinking a spoon against an empty glass, the night’s hostess got the party’s attention. She thanked everyone for attending and welcomed them to her home. She then introduced this year’s President, Laurel Stokes. After a huge round of applause, Laurel detailed what the organization has planned for the rest of the year. Namely, the National Reading Group Month (NRGM) panel featuring three non-fiction writers and the highly anticipated November scavenger hunt. Also mentioned was Women in the Literary Landscape, a non-fiction book about WNBA members over the past 100 years.

“This is one of my favorite events because it feels like returning home from summer camp” Stokes said. “You enjoy the time away, but then you’re really happy to see everyone again. I also had fun tonight talking with our new members, and learning about their interests and the upcoming events that they’re excited to participate in.”

“This is the most engaged I’ve seen people,” member Sarah Woodruff said. “I’ve had people come up to me and introduce themselves immediately, which makes me feel comfortable going up to people and talking.”

Next up on the WNBA-NYC’s calendar is the NRGM: Art of Writing Nonfiction panel.

The Women’s National Book Association was founded in 1917 by female booksellers who weren’t allowed in the men’s organizations. Nearly 100 years later, the WNBA is still supporting women in the book industry through literary events, networking, literacy projects, workshops, open mic nights, book clubs, and many other entertaining programs throughout the season!
