UN Corner: UN Women

In her New York Bookwoman column, “UN Corner,” Jill Tardiff highlights UN Women and their recent efforts towards women’s empowerment.

UN Women Co-Sponsored Events during the 56th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (27 Feb – 9 Mar).

The theme of the 56th Session on the Status of Women was the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, sustainable development, and current challenges.

Facts:

  • Rural women constitute one-fourth of the world’s population.
  • If rural women had equal access to productive resources, agricultural yields would rise and there would be 100 million to 150 million fewer hungry people.

UN Women is the UN entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women with a focus on violence against women, peace and security, leadership and participation, national planning and budgeting, economic empowerment, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
