Ma, Room and its contents are the only people 5-year-old Jack has ever known. He and Ma spend their days in a garden shed with a skylight interacting with Sink, Wardrobe, Bed, Bathtub, and TV. Because he has never known anything else he believes that everything in the 10×10 shed is the whole world.
Unbeknownst to Jack, he is being held captive by his Ma’s kidnapper and rapist, whom they call Old Nick. Jack’s world comes crashing down when he and Ma finally escape from Room. Now both have to navigate the outside world.
The book and the movie are phenomenal and told from Jack’s perspective. But don’t worry, you don’t have to read the book to see the movie. While the film definitely does the book justice, it stands on it’s own with actors Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay as the main characters. They bring the story to life in a very real, loving and sometimes heart-wrenching way.
Larson’s performance made me feel all of her pain, fear, exhaustion, aggravation, fierceness, hopes, gratitude, and joy.
