Spring is almost here! It’s time to start stretching your legs with some great Bookish Events in March.

Inspired by one of David Markson’s late works of fiction, this panel invites authors of non-traditional fictions to discuss their work, writing processes, inspirations, and motivations. Such hybrid forms are books that mix fiction and non-fiction, books that employ intertextuality, that use research and the documentary impulse in some way, or involve the intermixing both lyrical and more prose-like approaches. With Laurie Sheck, David Shields, Shelley Jackson and Wayne Koestenbaum. Moderated by Lucy Ives.

 

Silence Is Violence: LGBTQ Writing in A Fracturing Political Climate

When: Sunday, March 5th

Time: 6pm

Larry Kramer once said: “I don’t consider myself an artist. I consider myself a very opinionated man who uses words as fighting tools.” This panel promises a lively discussion of the intersection between LGBTQ writing and politics, from HIV/AIDS activism, to class and race identity, to gay persecution both historical and contemporary, exploring what it means to be a sexual minority in today’s political climate.

Featuring Marlen Schachinger, Simon Froehling, Fabian Hischmann, and Francine Prose, and moderated by William Johnson of Lambda Literary.

 

Drink, Draw n’ Take Action

When: Tuesday, March 7th

Time: 7pm

Where: Housing Works – Bookstore Cafe, 126 Crosby St.

Housing Works Bookstore, Huffington Post Arts & Culture and a group of New York-based authors are teaming up to host a night of drinking, drawing and sending messages to members of congress who have the ability to enact change in our uncertain political climate.

There will be a few of your favorite authors, including Rebecca Schiff, Repro Rights Zine, and more on site to read some inspiring words as you work.

What you need to bring: Stamps!

 

Query Roulette

When: Tuesday, March 14th

Time: Your scheduled meeting

Where: The Association of American Publishers, 71 Fifth Ave., between 14-15th Sts., 2nd flr.

WNBA-NYC’s Query Roulette is a round-robin style event that matches one-on-one meetings between authors and literary agents. Writers who need publishing advice, especially on the important query letter, can get it from up to ten agents in one night!

Fees start at $33.00 each for WNBA-NYC members ($45.00 for non-members).

  • Book 5-7 query sessions, and get an additional 10% off entire registration.
  • Book 8-10 query sessions, and get an additional 15% off entire registration.

 

Women in Crime Fiction II

Join the Center for Fiction for the second installment of this wildly popular panel, celebrating the best in contemporary women writers of crime, mystery and thriller genres. With Susan Isaacs, Hank Phillippi Ryan, Lisa Lutz and Laura Joh Rowland, with moderator SJ Rozan.

 

AFEST, a conference of Latin American writers

When: March 27 & March 28

Time: 9am – 4pm each day

Where: 53 Washington Square South (between Thomson and Sullivan)

Sessions are free and open to the public

In these dark times, changes to our liberties require us to react fast and politicize our everyday life. We are making a call to writers, readers, compañera/os, and friends: what can literature do in times of social emergency? We urge you to participate in the discussion sessions at AFEST, a Latin American writers encuentro that will bring together voices allied by literature. Sign up for our discussion sessions on March 27 and 28 with our invited writers—the instigators of the debate—who will join us to talk about the present, past and future of feminist action.

Women Writing About Mothers and Daughters

When: Friday, March 31st

WNBA-NYC and NYU partner in our latest panel featuring four women authors who have explored the subject of mother and daughter: the most primal and intense relationship you can have. They’ll read about and discuss relationships that can be as fraught, terrifying, and competitive as they are inspirational, supportive, and life-changing.
