Publishing and the Political Conversation

Given our current political climate, we are exploring the role of publishing and politics with a group of panelists participating in the conversation in a variety of ways. Some are actively promoting political, social, and environmental activism through the books they develop and initiatives they spearhead. Others are walking the line between customer wants and political beliefs. Through this panel we will discuss the ways in which each contribute to the political conversation.

Our panelists include:

The Global Novel: Writing for the World in the 21st Century

What is the global novel? What work covers both the contemporary and the classic? What story spans all cultures and creeds? Perhaps the global novel is not a genre so much as a way of seeing the world.

Adam Kirsch, one of the most prodigious and versatile literary critics working today, asks an important question for our times in his new book: What is the future of fiction in an age of globalization?

He will be in conversation with John Freeman, author, educator, and editor as well as Laura Marsh, literary editor of the New Republic; formerly an editor at the New York Review of Books. The conversation will be moderated by Chris Jackson, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of One World, a just relaunched imprint of Random House.

 

The Poetry Brothel – The Clue Edition

The Poetry Brothel is a unique and immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello.

Spoonbill Studio is hosting two separate but identical workshops by master bookbinder Hedi Kyle! In this workshop, we offer you a multi-faceted, engaging process. We will fold a variety of small books and related objects that then all fit into a tailored box. We will provide a different kind of paper for each project and all the materials will be precut roughly to assure a comfortable flow.
